Joachim Heberle has been a Professor of Experimental Molecular Biophysics at the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) since 2009. After studying chemistry in Stuttgart and Würzburg and obtaining his PhD in biophysics at the FU Berlin (1991), he first worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Hahn Meitner Institute (Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin), and later as a group leader at the Jülich Institute of Structural Biology (Jülich Research Centre). He also spent periods abroad as a visiting scholar in the USA (University of Arizona), and in Sweden at the Nobel Institute of Chemistry (Gothenburg University). Joachim Heberle received his habilitation in Biophysical Chemistry at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf in 1998. Before transferring to the FU Berlin, he was Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Bielefeld (2005-2009). His research interest particularly focuses on the functioning of different membrane proteins. Molecular biological and biochemical methods are used in his experiments, as are various spectroscopic techniques.
In addition to his professorship, Joachim Heberle is spokesperson of the SFB 1078 “Protonation Dynamics in Protein Function”; he is a member of the Excellence Cluster “UniSysCat”, and since 2015 he has been an Associate Editor of the journal Chemical Reviews. He was also a member of the DFG’s Biological and Biomimetic Chemistry Review Board from 2008 to 2012. Joachim Heberle was a member of the Excellence Council of the FU Berlin from 2010 to 2018.
Joachim Heberle has been a member of the “German Research Ombudsman” Committee appointed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2014.
